CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING INITIATIVE
The PCCEBC began its Culturally Responsive Teaching initiative by building a collaboration between PCCEBC, Pitt County Schools, and East Carolina University's College of Education. In a joint effort Dr. Geneva Gay, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Washington-Seattle and noted author of numerous books including "Culturally Responsive Teaching: Theory, Research and Practice," "Becoming Multicultural Educators, " and "Expressively Black" visited Greenville and presented to a crowd of about 300 educators, and community leaders on the subject of Culturally Responsive Teaching. Dr. Gay subsequently visited Pitt County
Schools and provided staff development for about 30 teachers and school administrators. This was an excellent start. Research indicates that teachers need about 80 hours of training over time to facilitate change in teaching methods. CRT Training must be a sustained effort if it is to have any impact. The PCCEBC has proposed an implementation strategy: CRT Implementation Strategy.pdf
